Islamabad
Parliamentarians from across political divide on Tuesday held a walk on the Constitution Avenue to denounce the enforcement of Emergency Plus by former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007.
The walk, held to observe Black Day, commenced from Parliament House and culminated outside Supreme Court building where the political leaders delivered speeches.
The walk was led by the PML-N leaders Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, Ahsan Iqbal and others while PPP leaders and ministers Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah, Babar Awan, Ayatollah Durrani, ANP leader and minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, JUI-F leader Rehmatullah Kakar. Interestingly, a lone MNA from PML-Q — Khadim Hussain Wattoo — also took part in the walk.
Carrying placards inscribed with slogans for independence of judiciary as well as the parliament, the PML-N MNAs raised slogans against former president Musharraf and imposition of emergency. Women MPs were also vocal and they led the walk.
Interestingly, PML-N MNA Zahid Hamid, who was Minister for Law and Justice when emergency was promulgated by General (r) Musharraf, also took part in the walk. However, he kept mum during the entire protest.
Talking to APP, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan said he had joined the walk to denounce the November 3 incidents.
“There were three Black Days in our history — July 5, 1977; 12th October 1999; and 3 November 2007, as two military dictators had breached the Constitution and subverted the elected governments of the country on these days,” he added.
Addressing the participants of the walk, PML-N leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi said that the dictator had imposed emergency and the PML-N leadership would carry on the struggle till the repeal of 17th Amendment, sovereignty of the parliament and the country would be cleansed from terrorism. He said his party and its leadership reiterates resolve to fight for its mission. He also showered praises for the judges who had waged struggle against the dictator.
Khwaja Saad Rafique said PML-N would carry on its struggle for the supremacy of parliament and the constitution. He said the judiciary, media and lawyers had also supported the cause of supremacy of the rule of law.
He demanded of the government to evolve a National Security Plan in consultation with the political leadership. He also called for action against former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution.
