KARACHI: Pakistan’s middle order batsman Misbah-ul-Haq has been allowed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to feature in Bangladesh’s domestic cricket tournament. Misbah received an invitation from Bangladesh based club which he has accepted after receiving permission from PCB. He would not be participating in the sixth and seventh round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

Injured Siddle adds to Aussie woes

NEW DELHI: Injury-plagued Australia suffered yet another blow on Tuesday when fast bowler Peter Siddle was ruled out of the rest of the one-day series in India because of a side strain. Siddle is the fourth player after fellow fast bowler Brett Lee, all-rounder James Hopes and wicket-keeper Tim Paine to be sent home with injury. Siddle bowled five overs during his team’s 24-run win in the fourth match in Mohali on Monday before experiencing stiffness near his left rib cage. Team physiotherapist Kevin Sims said Siddle’s injury was not serious but he was told to leave the tour because he was unlikely to be available for the last three games.

ST PETERSBURG, Florida: Serena Williams has set the record for single-season prize money in women’s tennis by topping $6.5million in 2009. Williams broke the WTA mark of slightly under $5.5 million, earned by Justine Henin in 2007. The American won the season-ending tour championships on Sunday. The younger Williams also won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009. Williams’ career prize money is now at a record $28.5 million.

Barron handed PGA’s first doping ban

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida: Doug Barron, an American with only one PGA start in three years, was given a one-year doping ban on Monday by the US PGA Tour - its first suspension for performance-enhancing substances. The PGA, which instituted the anti-doping test program last July, imposed the penalty immediately without comment other than announcing the punishment. Under PGA policy, the exact banned substance Barron was found to have taken was not revealed. Barron, 40, did not seem to gain any edge based upon his 2009 results and the ban will not exactly strip the PGA of one of its top attractions either. The best career finish for Barron in a PGA event was third in the 2005 Byron Nelson Championship. He played 24 events that year and 28 in 2006.

In spite of that, the German is hopeful of being back in action soon. “When you are someone who is as physically fit a I am you can quite easily get over this flu,” he said.

DUBAI: This Gulf boom town has set its sights on becoming the first Arab city to host the Olympics with a committee meeting on Monday to consider a possible bid for the 2020 games. The city-state’s media office said Dubai ruler Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum met with the group, urging it to devote its full efforts to the campaign. His son, the crown prince, chaired the gathering, which included several other members of the emirate’s political elite, suggesting strong government support for a possible bid.

Malaysia to host Masters Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will hold the World Super Series Masters Finals next month, the Badminton World Federation announced on Tuesday, saying it had struggled to find a host due to the tough economic times. The event will be held from December 2-6 in Kuala Lumpur. “It is with a sense of extreme pleasure that we are now able to announce the much-awaited news regarding the host of the Super Series Finals,” said Badminton World Federation (BWF) deputy president Paisan Rangsikitpho. The format of the competition — which concludes the 12-leg BWF World Super Series — remains unchanged, with the top eight ranked players or pairs in the Super Series ranking qualifying for the finals. The finals prize pool is 500,000 dollars, with the winners of the men’s and women’s singles pocketing 40,000 dollars each.

Alves set to return for Barca

MADRID: Barcelona’s Brazilian defender Dani Alves has returned to the squad to face Russia’s Rubin Kazan in the Champions League on Wednesday (today) after two weeks out injured, the club said. Alves injured his right thigh during Barca’s shock 2-1 home defeat to the Russian champions on October 20. He had been expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks, but on Monday was allowed to resume training. “The Brazilian international has made a speedy recovery in just 13 days from an injury that initially looked set to keep him out for three weeks,” the Spanish and European champions said in a statement. “He will therefore be available for the match against Kazan.”
