THE Punjab University (PU) administration on Monday notified that students and visitors would have to pay fee to park their motorcycles and cars etc at the parking lots set up at the university’s New Campus.
It is learnt that Rs 5 would be charged for motorbikes and Rs 10 for vehicles. The PU administration has also announced issuance of special cards for students and visitors. Students and visitors will have to pay Rs 100 per month for parking of bikes and Rs 200 per month for cars.
Two parking stands were set up inside PU New Campus, one near Gate No 2 and the other near the Islamic Centre, as a security measure to stop entry of vehicles to the campus in the wake of current wave of terrorism. The university had also started a shuttle service within the campus to pick and drop students.
Students talking to The News criticised the PU administration for imposing parking fee on students, saying students should have been provided free parking as they were already paying different kinds of funds, including transportation, to the university in addition to monthly fees.
PU spokesman Shabir Sarwar said the decision was made by the varsity’s auction committee for security of students and visitors. PU teachers and employees, however, can park their vehicles and bikes for free at the varsity’s parking lots.
