Karachi

Public gatherings and the parking of vehicles on I.I Chundrigar have been banned for an indefinite period by the Sindh government under Section 144, according to a notification issued on Monday by Sindh Home Secretary Arif Khan.

Moreover, offices and buildings on I.I Chundrigar Road can no longer be rented out without a no-objection certificate.Sindh Chief Secretary Fazalur Rehman confirmed the imposition of the ban, and said that the aim was to protect the lives and properties of people. He made it clear, however, that no specific threat of terrorism had been received for any portion of or institution on I.I Chundrigar Road.

The CS said another objective of imposing Section 144 was to protect media offices and journalists, because the area was a hub of media activity. He said that protests and rallies on I.I Chundrigar Road had become routine, and terrorists might take advantage of large crowds.
