Team needed camp in cooler climate: Islah
Tuesday, October 27, 2009
KARACHI: Former Olympian and captain Islahuddin Siddiqui says that Pakistan hockey team must win World Cup Qualifiers as world’s best nine team were not participating in the event.

He said that Pakistan Hockey Federation should have organised World Cup Qualifier camp in Abbottabad as the weather there is similar to that of Lille, France.

Pakistan hockey team has left for France on Sunday to participate in the World Cup Qualifiers starting 31st October.

“In the past, we used to arrange our camps at the venues where conditions were similar to that of tournament venues,” Islahuddin added.

However, the legendary player added that the team’s departure to France, a week early would help the players to acclimatise with the conditions in Lille.

Pakistan is the best among the participating teams. Apart from Pakistan, Japan, Poland, Russia, France and Italy are taking part in the World Cup Qualifier.

Pakistan would meet Italy in their opening match of the competition.

This is the first time in World Cup history since its inception in 1971 that Green Shirts are playing qualifying tournament for entry in the global tournament.

Pakistan have won the World Cup four times including inaugural event in 1971 (Spain), 1978 (Argentina), 1882 (India) and 1994 (Australia).
