 Police break up JI rally, arrest 33 in Bannu

BANNU: The police stopped the Jamaat-e-Islami from holding a protest rally here on Monday and arrested 33 activists of the party for violating Section 144.

Eyewitnesses said the JI activists were about to hold a public rally in Lakki Gate at 2:00 pm in connection with their party’s ‘Go America Go’ campaign when the police stormed the venue. Prior to the rally, the district administration had announced enforcement of Section 144 to prevent the scheduled rally which was to be addressed by JI Ameer Munawar Hassan and NWFP head Sirajul Haq. It had also directed the police at the Speena Tangi checkpost to stop the entry of the both the leaders.

Following the enforcement of Section 144 and prevention of the entry of their leaders, JI workers scuffled with the personnel of the law-enforcement agency present there. The workers also hurled chairs at the police.

The police shot fire into the air and tear gas to disperse the activists. Eyewitnesses said some of the workers sustained injuries as the hide and seek continued between the police and activists.

The police claimed to have arrested 33 JI activists of JI.Our correspondent adds Karak: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) would stage rallies across the country today to protest against the arrest of scores of party activists in Bannu.

This was stated by JI chief Syed Munawar Hassan and deputy leader Sirajul Haq at a press conference on Monday. They lashed out at the provincial government for manhandling the party workers and stopping them from holding the ‘Go America Go’ rally in Bannu.

Earlier, Munawar Hassan and Sirajul Haq were prevented from entering the Bannu district at the Speena Tangi checkpoint. They alleged that the ANP-led government was paving the way for the imposition of martial law in the country.
