KARACHI: After missing Asian Volleyball Championship in Manila last September due to financial crisis, Pakistan are looking in excellent form as they registered their second consecutive victory in the Al-Rashid International Men’s Volleyball Championship when they beat Indonesia by 3-1 in Dubai on Saturday.
The Greenshirts had outclassed hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 3-0 in their opener the other day. In the first set, Pakistani spikers played in controlled fashion, never allowing the opponents to settle down, lifting it with 25-18 to take 1-0 lead. In the second set, Indonesia offered great resistance but in the end the Zaheer Abbas-led Pakistan managed to take it with 25-22. Indonesia proved too lethal for the Greenshirts in the third set, winning it by 25-15 to reduce the deficit to 1-2. However, Pakistan fought back strongly and won the fourth set by 25-20 to secure 3-1 triumph. Pakistani spikers Zaheer Abbas, Ismail Khan, Mohib Rasool and Shuja Abbas played key role in Pakistan’s win. The Greenshirts, now, will face Thailand in their third match today (Sunday).
In the championship, along with Pakistan, hosts UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, Bahrain and defending champions Oman are participating. In the last edition Pakistan had clinched bronze medal.
