PPP not sole beneficiary of NRO: Khurshid

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah has said the PPP is not the sole beneficiary of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) as 2,900 political figures of the PML-N, the MQM and other political parties also benefited from the ordinance. He was talking to media men at a reception hosted by the Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo. He said most of the workers from different parties had benefited from the NRO, adding parliament would decide the fate of the issue. He said that Pakistan had convinced the US over the issue, adding the government would not make any compromise on the nuclear assets.
‘Lower judiciary must be free from corruption’

LAHORE: Supreme Court Bar Association President Ali Ahmad Kurd has said that the lower judiciary must be free from corruption as it is the backbone of the judicial system. Talking to the media during his visit to the Lahore High Court Bar here on Saturday, the senior lawyer warned that if the judges did not render justice, lawyers could launch a movement against them.
Derailment causes traffic suspension

KHAIRPUR: Railway traffic was restored on Saturday after it remained suspended for
four hours due to the derailment of three coaches of a Karachi-bound goods train near the Sangi Railway Station, Pano Aqil, the Railway Police said. Trains had to stop in Rohri and Sukkur. The railway staff cleared the track for the traffic after four hours.
THATTA: A young man, identified as Arif, son of Allah Bachayo Gandaro, was shot dead allegedly by the watchman of a fish farm belonging to Haji Anwar Karnani in Deh Doomani near here late on Friday night.
HYDERABAD: Residents of Hala Naka blocked the National Highway and staged a demonstration for three hours here on Saturday to protest against an anti-encroachment drive in their area. The residents also set tyres ablaze. They said the drive was launched at the behest of builders without prior notice. They said they were living in the area for several decades, but the Taluka City authorities were demolishing their houses illegally. Their demonstration caused suspension of traffic. However, they ended their protest later on the assurance of police and local representatives.
Sohrab Faqir laid to rest

KHAIRPUR: Sufi singer Sohrab Faqir was laid to rest at his native village, Tapir Wada, here on Saturday. Hundreds of people from across Sindh attended his funeral and paid tributes to him. However, neither any official from the Culture Department nor the DCO attended the funeral. On behalf of the Sindh chief minister, the EDO (Revenue) provided Rs 50,000 to heirs of Faqir for the expenses of his funeral rites. Besides, Munawwar Wasan gave Rs 25,000 to sons of Faqir on behalf of Sindh Minister Manzoor Hussain Wasan. Meanwhile, Talpur Wada and Bozdar Wada remained closed to mourn the death of Faqir. The Sindhi Adabi Sangat has announced three-day mourning.
‘Complaint office set up to help stop child abuse’

KHAIRPUR: Additional Chief Secretary and Provincial Ombudsmen, Sindh, Fasihuddin Ahmed, has said a special complaint office has been established in Karachi with the help of the Unicef for stopping child abuse and violence in schools and jails. The ombudsman was talking to newsmen during his visit to Sukkur on Saturday. He said there were 13 offices of the Ombudsmen in the province, while five more offices would be established in Khairpur, Sanghar, Ghotki, Tando Allahyar and Jamshoro. The Sindh governor had approved the establishment of the offices, he added. He said his office had received 130,582 complaints of different nature, while the regional office in Sukkur received 807 complaints. Out of these, 8,600 were disposed of, while 37,293 were still being heard.
Bandage recovered from abdomen

LARKANA: A four-metre-long bandage was recovered on Saturday from the abdomen of a woman, who had recently undergone caesarean section at another private hospital. Mehwais, wife of Zahid Hussain Shaikh, had undergone surgical delivery at Dr Dayali’s hospital on July 25, 2009. The operation was conducted by Dr Dayali. Her husband told media persons that after the operation his wife was complaining of pain. She was admitted to the Latif Medical Centre, Larkana, on Saturday where Dr Eram Majid removed the four-metre-long bandage from her abdomen.
