Sunday, October 25, 2009
Our correspondent

KHAR: The elders and Ulema of Mamond tribe Saturday raised the first Qaumi Lashkar to help the security forces in their endeavours to restore writ of the government in the troubled Mamond tehsil in Bajaur Agency.

The lashkar, or armed volunteers force, equipped with latest weapons carried out flag march and covered some eight kilometers distance from Lar Khalozo to Lagharai on foot.

Malik Taj Muhammad of Lagharai, Malik Sultan Zeb of Lar Khalozo, Malik Taj and Malik Muhammad Taj of Tarkho and Malik Ayaz Khan of Bar Killay were spearheading the lashkar.

The volunteers were chanting slogans in favour of Pakistan and Army. They took oath that no militant would be allowed to carry out sabotage activities in their area and pledged to fight side by side with the security forces against the militants.

The volunteers also demolished and torched several houses of suspected militants, including that of a commander, in Tarkho area. About 10 houses were burnt down and the lashkar leaders threatened to torch the properties of other militants if they continued to pose threat to peace in the area.

The lashkar was raised after persistent efforts by the government and the security forces to motivate the Mamond tribe to stand up to the militants led by Maulana Faqir Muhammad and other TTP commanders.
