 Jankovic survives, Hanescu out of Moscow

MOSCOW: Defending champion Jelena Jankovic is into the second round of the WTA Kremlin Cup after a battling three-set defeat of Jaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan here on Tuesday.

In the ATP section Wayne Odesnik of the United States battled back from a set down to produce the biggest upset at the event so far ousting second seed Victor Hanescu of Romania 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

The second seeded Jankovic, who is seeking a place in the season-ending WTA championships at Doha, won 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to record her second win over Shvedova, ranked 50th in the world, in three meetings.

Top seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who is also targeting the last remaining place in the Doha field, is also into the second round after beating Romania’s Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2, 6-2 in one hour 20 minutes.

Hanescu, currenty 31st in the ATP rankings, took the opening set in 47 minutes but his opponent refused to surrender and pulled the scores level at one set all after 90 minutes on court with a late break in the second.

Another American Robby Ginepri, 92nd in the ATP rankings, saw off fourth seed Russian Igor Andreev, 2005 champion here, in a tough three-setter 6-3, 6-7 (9/11), 7-6 (7/1).

Sixth seed Serb Janko Tipsarevic and the local crowd’s longstanding favourite Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, the seventh seed, both advanced into the second round beating Daniel Koellerer of Austria 6-4, 6-3 and Russian wild card Andrey Kuznetsov 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 respectively.

Henin set for Brisbane return

Belgium’s seven-time Grand Slam winner Justine Henin on Wednesday confirmed she would make her comeback from a 15-month retirement at Australia’s Brisbane International in January. Meanwhile, David Nalbandian is planning to follow the same path as Argentine compatriot Juan Martin Del Potro when he resumes his career next year. However, the 27-year-old expects to make a comeback next year and has entered the Auckland Open from January 11-16 to complete his preparations for the Australian Open, starting in Melbourne the following weekend.

Haas, Lopez win in Stockholm

Tommy Haas and Feliciano Lopez put aside last week’s injury dramas in Asia as the pair of seeds returned to apparent robust health with wins into the second round of the Stockholm Open on Wednesday.

Haas showed perfect fitness as he crushed 17 aces in 55 minutes in his 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Frenchman Florent Serra. Lopez defeated Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-2, 6-4.

Robin Soderling opened his home campaign against Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador later while Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero was playing Marcos Baghdatis.
