However, sources said the FBR had established Tax Facilitation Centres (TFCs) in various parts of the country in order to facilitate the taxpayers in filing income tax returns.

Returns filed by the Association of Persons (AOP) declined a little bit as they stood at 5,461 till Sept 30 against 6,873 in the same period of last fiscal year.

The number of salary returns stood at 40,773 till Sept 30, 2009 against 42,696 in the same period of the previous fiscal year. The number of non-salaried returns stood at only 162,131 returns till September 30, 2009 against 159,564 in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Total number of returns with statement fetched 537,946 returns under Universal Self Assessment Scheme (USAS) till Sept 30, 2009 against 630,223 returns in the same period of 2008-09, showing a negative number of returns of 92,277.

Alarmingly, the number of returns in category of importers, exporters and contractors/suppliers showed major declining trend in the current fiscal year. The number of import return filers stood at 316 only till Sept 30, 2009 compared to 5,671 in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
