 250MW shortage: KESC continues loadshedding
Tuesday, October 20, 2009
By our correspondent

Karachi

The city faced a power shortage of 250 Megawatt (MW) on Monday as the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant remained offline along with the low gas pressure from Sui Southern Gas Company led the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to carry on with the power loadshedding while the citizens faced a hot day.

A KESC spokesperson conceded that the utility faced a power shortfall of 191MW causing several spells of power loadshedding during the day and evening hours. The utility officials said that power demand remained at 2025MW while the power utility supplied was 1834MW. The spokesperson added that the pressure of gas from Sui Southern Gas Company remained at 210MMFCD, which was below KESC’s required gas quota of 276 MMFCD.

In various residential areas of the city, the instances of power loadshedding began as early as 1 am, Monday and lasted through out the day owing to faults in KESC’s power transmission and distribution systems.

Meanwhile, the independent power producers collectively produced 233MW of electricity for the KESC with Tapal Energy producing 112MW, Gul Ahmed Energy generating 50MW, Defence Cogen Desalination and Power Plant produced 71MW while Pakistan Electric Power Company supplied 630MW of electricity through the national grid.
