PESHAWAR: Availability of sugar has improved and the prices of the commodity have fallen to Rs43 in open markets in the provincial metropolis, but in the militancy-hit districts of Malakand and Mohmand tribal agency shortage of the sweetener continues.
Supply side improved in Peshawar on Wednesday after sugar quota was released to nominated dealers in the Rampura Gate, Ashraf Road where long queues of consumers were witnessed and where at one time the police constables resorted to baton-charge to keep the queues straight.
However, overall situation in the city improved and sugar in many places was selling at Rs43.
Similarly, the utility stores at University Road Hayatabad and other localities were also supplied sugar. Customers thronged these stores and at some of these outlets 300 bags of 2kg were sold out in less than 30 minutes.
The dealers and district officials said that if the supply remains uninterrupted, the price of sugar would come down to the level fixed by the Supreme Court.
In the District Buner of the Malakand Division sugra supply was at worst and one kilogram of sugar was selling at record high of Rs200/kg.
The News correspondent Shaukat Ali reports from Buner that the 28 utility stores in the district have not been provided any sugar since Ramazan and the commodity has disappeared from the entire district.
One of the traders, wishing anonymity, said that some dealers in the district had hoarded huge quantity of sugar and the administration was not taking notice of it.
In Mingora sugar was selling at Rs55 but in the evening the commodity disappeared and the consumers could not find sugar for even higher prices. In Mohmand Agency the retailers are selling sugar for Rs80 per kg.
