Modern machinery for health centres, says CM
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
By Our Correspondent

LAHORE

CHIEF Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday stressed the need for modernising the health sector for the provision of medical facilities to the common man. He said the government was utilising the maximum resources for uplift of the health sector but the desired results had not been achieved due to lack of sense of responsibility in those associated with the sector.

He was addressing a meeting held for modernising the health sector at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat here on Tuesday. Diplomat American Board of International Medicines Dr Jawad Iqbal and Valentia Tech, Ireland, Director Dr Ahmad Jawad gave a detailed briefing regarding improvement of healthcare system in the province and the importance of modern technology.

Mr Shahbaz said three pilot projects would be launched to use modern technology and to ensure quality health services to the masses at the rural and basic health centres. He said the scope of the programme would be expanded after the success of the pilot projects.

The chief minister said rural and basic health centres were being upgraded and 12 mobile dispensaries were being imported for the provision of health facilities in the rural areas which would provide medical facilities to people under a complete package and the Health Department and its staff would not be concerned with the dispensaries.

He said the sole purpose of granting autonomous status to 16 teaching hospitals was to ensure modern medical facilities in these hospitals and the availability of the latest machinery and equipments so that their standard should not be less than that of the best private hospitals. He said it was expected that well-to-do people would avail medical facilities at the government hospitals and pay the medical expenditure so that the income, thus generated, could be used for medical facilities to the poor and improving the performance of the hospitals.

Mr Shahbaz said that after taking over as chief minister, he had spent his maximum time on the improvement of health sector and not only the budget of the health sector had been enhanced but the service structure of doctors had also been improved and remuneration of young doctors had been increased.

He said the government’s measures could yield the desired results only if those associated with the health sector performed their duties with commitment, hard work and a sense of responsibility.

Elimination of poverty: A meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz ministers in the Punjab cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat here on Tuesday.

The meeting discussed the ongoing development projects in the province and proceedings of the current session of the Punjab Assembly.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Shahbaz said serving the masses was the mission of the PML-N and maintaining law and order, providing justice to people and eliminating poverty, unemployment and ignorance were the priorities of the government and a strategy had been adopted for this purpose.

He directed the provincial ministers to utilise all energies for the rapid development of the province, ensuring solution to public problems.
