CNG stations asked to comply with safety rules

KARACHI: CNG filling station owners have been advised not to raise their “pressure bar” above 210 to ensure the safety of life, plants and vehicles. This piece of advice was given by Senior Executive Director Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) Javed Nazir while speaking to members of CNG Station Owners Association here on Tuesday.He said high pressure can cause a blast and endanger lives of CNG users. He said OGRA has prescribed safety measures for CNG stations and CNG users to avoid accidents. He pointed out that violating CNG stations can either face closure or attract a huge penalty. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman CNG Station Owners Malik Khuda Bakhsh also urged members to strictly abide by safety measures in a bid to prevent accidents.



Gold prices hit fresh highs

KARACHI: Gold prices hit fresh highs at Rs33,000 per tola in local markets on Tuesday on the back of escalating bullion rates in the international market. The increase in per tola gold price was Rs400 compared to the previous day. Ten-gram gold price also surged to Rs28,285, an increase of Rs343 compared to Monday, said Haroon Rasheed Chand, President Sindh All Sarraf and Jewellers Association. In the London market, the yellow metal hit fresh highs above $1,064 per ounce, up $11 compared to the previous day.



Sugar price soars to Rs100 in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Sugar crisis continued in the provincial capital as the commodity was being sold for Rs80 to Rs100 per kg in different markets and shops. The commodity disappeared from the markets when NWFP government fixed sugar rate at Rs40 a kg, following the Supreme Court’s directive in that regard. On the other hand, sugar supply was less than demand at the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) and citizens could not get the essential item despite waiting for hours in queues.



TCP gets 7 bids in urea tender

KARACHI: Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has received seven bids against its covering tender for the supply of 100,000 metric tons of urea. A TCP source said on Tuesday that bidders have offered prices in the range of $289.71 to $ 297.5 per metric ton C&F basis. The tender was floated on October 3. Helen Dungemittel of Germany had submitted the lowest bid. TCP has floated three covering tenders for the import of 100,000MT of urea each in addition to four tenders for the import of 600,000MT of urea. Meanwhile, TCP has floated another covering tender for the import of 100,000MT of urea. Bidding for this tender will be held on October 20.



‘Development work encourages industrialists’

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Trade and Industry Rauf Siddiqui, while appreciating fast development work in industrial zones of the city, expressed hope on Tuesday that it would boost confidence of industrialists in the government. He said this while inaugurating the third phase of infrastructure works in the Federal B Area Industrial Zone. Officials of Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industry gave presentation to the minister and informed him about the street light project in the third phase after completion of roads and rain water drainage system in the first two phases. They said street lights would help reduce the rising crime rate in the industrial zones.



Illegal gateway exchange busted

ISLAMABAD: A joint investigation team of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the FIA raided a network of illegal gateway exchanges in Hayatabad, Peshawar, and arrested one person for alleged involvement in grey telephony. The illegal facility consisted of nine GSM gateways with 56 SIMs. The accused was terminating international telecom traffic from three different foreign companies. Chairman PTA Dr Mohammed Yaseen on Tuesday warned all those involved in illegal telecom business to stop their activities. Otherwise, he warned, the PTA would take strict action against them as per law. The investigation team works round the clock and adopts different procedures to apprehend culprits.



PQ activity

KARACHI: The Port Qasim handled 82,793 tons of cargo, comprising 73,527 tons of import and 9,536 tons of export cargo during last 24 hours ended 0800 hours on Tuesday. Berth occupancy was recorded at 82 per cent. Nine ships Maersk Georgia, Donau Trader, Trakia, Sem Jong, Jag-I, Alaska-II, Clipper Viking, SC Ningbo and Mire were loading/offloading containers, cement, sugar, sulphur, ethylene, palm oil and furnace oil during the reported period. Three ships sailed out to sea during last 24 hours. Two ships carrying containers and chemicals were expected to take berth at the Container Terminal and Engro Terminal on Tuesday, while two ships are due on Thursday.



FPCCI body

KARACHI: Sultan Ahmed Chawla, President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), has nominated Shahid Hussain Shaikh Vice Chairman of FPCCI Standing Committee on Rice Exports for the year 2009-10. Shahid is a director at Indus Flour Mills, said an FPCCI press release issued on Tuesday.



NetSol receives export award

LAHORE: NetSol Technologies Ltd, a software applications developer and provider of information technology (IT) services, has won the Export Award 2009 in recognition of its contribution to the national economy. According to a press release, Federal Minister for Commerce, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, presented the award to a NetSol representative at a ceremony celebrating 25 years of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI). Announcing the award, ICCI President Mian Shaukat Masud said, “ICCI is proud to have NetSol as its member, contributing heavily to the economy of Pakistan by recruiting over 700 employees.”



Saudi Kingdom Holding, Tata mull joint investments

RIYADH: Kingdom Holding, controlled by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, and Indian conglomerate Tata Group are examining unspecified joint investment opportunities, the Saudi firm said on Tuesday. Kingdom Holding, one of the largest shareholders in Citigroup, said Tata Group’s Chairman Ratan N Tata, has held a meeting with Prince Alwaleed in Riyadh. “Tata said his visit was exploratory in order to find potential investment opportunities between Kingdom Holding and Tata group. The two also exchanged general strategic ideas related to various areas of investment,” it said.



Flextronics to hire over 6,000 Chinese workers

HONG KONG: Electronics manufacturing giant Flextronics International said on Tuesday it will hire more than 6,000 migrant workers in mainland China this month because of a rise in demand ahead of Christmas. The company will also take on an additional 1,000 workers in the next two months, Valerie Kurniawan, senior communications director for Flextronics Asia, told AFP. “The demand is coming from all over the group, it’s all segments and industries,” Kurniawan said.
