Sabers beat Chargers in last ball thriller
Monday, October 12, 2009
HYDERABAD: Somerset beat Deccan Chargers by one wicket off the last ball to start its campaign in style here at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday.

With this, all Indian teams have now failed to win a single match in the first round of Champions League Twenty20 so far.

Earlier, Somerset won the toss and elected to field first. Deccan Chargers started well, but faltered later to end up at 153/9 in 20 overs. VVS Laxman was the top scorer with 46. Rohit Sharma and Venugopal Rao contributed 24 and 22 respectively. For Somerset, Ben Phillips took 3 wickets, while Alfonso Thomas and Peter Trego took 2 wickets each.

Chasing a victory target of 154, Somerset was in deep trouble, by losing 7 wickets for just 99 runs on board. However, James Hildreth and Alfonso Thomas added 50 runs for the 8th wicket, which changed the course of the game. Hildreth made 27.

Alfonso Thomas hit a boundary off the fourth ball to bring the scores at level. The fifth ball went for a duck and he hit the winning boundary off the last ball to win it for Somerset. Somerset reached 157/9 in 20 overs. For Deccan Chargers, RP Singh took 3 wickets, while Pragyan Ojha and Scott Styris took 2 wickets each. Alfonso Thomas, who remained unbeaten on 30, was declared "Man of the Match".
