The killing of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party (STPP) Gulshan Town president in Sachchal on Friday night ignited political violence on Saturday in Gulshan Town; as a result, two people were injured, while 10 vehicles were torched, and four shops and a hotel were gutted.
Eyewitnesses and the police said that late Friday night, two parties held a discussion over the possession of a plot in Sikander Goth. STPP Gulshan Town President Sardar Mohammed Juman Khan alias Gittu acted as a mediator in the Jirga, which was held at Cheppal Garden, Sachchal.
The discussion was interrupted by some activists of another political group. An argument erupted between the two groups, and some activists of the rival party opened indiscriminate firing, injuring Khan and six others, including a policeman.
The STPP activists shifted the injured people to a hospital, where Khan succumbed to his injuries. He was a resident of North Karachi, and belonged to Tando Mohammed Khan.
After his death, violence erupted in several areas of Gulshan Town, including Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Sachchal, as well as in Ghaggar Phattak and the National Highway in Bin Qasim Town. Unidentified armed men torched vehicles in Gulshan Town and Ghaggar Phattak, and blocked the National Highway and to protest Khan’s murder. The portion of University Road from NIPA Chowrangi to Safoora Goth was also affected and public transport remained suspended.
Moreover, miscreants torched five minibuses in Gulshan Town, and two buses and four motorcycles in Ghaggarh Phattak, the police said, adding that shops and hotels were also set on fire in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Ghaggar Phattak. Two people, identified as Rahim Bux and his son, Allah Daad, were injured.
Gulshan Town SP Arib Mehar said that the incident was the result of a dispute between two groups over the possession of a plot near Chappal Garden. He said that Khan and his companions reached the area for negotiations, and Khan was told to act as a mediator, when unidentified suspects shot at the group. As a result, at least seven people, including a policeman from the Sohrab Goth police station, were injured and shifted to hospitals.
The situation remained tense on Saturday in Sachchal, Safoora Goth, Ghagar Phattak and other areas dominated by the Sindhi-speaking population. Shops remained closed, and aerial firing was reported in several areas. Cases were registered against unidentified persons at the police stations concerned. The police, however, had not arrested anyone until the time this report was filed.—SBP
