With reference to the column titled “Weak politicos” by Harris Khalique (Sept 25), the writer has very deftly summed up the sly manipulation of Pakistani politics by the establishment. The writer concludes by saying that “politicians need a lot more resolve, vision and character if they want to strip the establishment of its undesired powers”. This left me wondering if the writer has failed to recollect that Pakistan was blessed with such politicians — one was assassinated at Liaquat Bagh and was found wearing a vest in tatters under his shervani, another was sent to the gallows and his memory haunts the imagination of this nation and on whose death cell was conveniently erected a park, and yet another was murdered ruthlessly at Liaquat Bagh.
Pakistan’s history is replete with harrowingly gory details of bloodshed we can never forget. Nor can we forgive those who roam around freely with blood on their hands. We can indeed not forgive Ayub, Yahya and Ghulam Ishaq Khan and neither can we ever forgive Zia. Bleed dear country bleed — for thou hast no saviour.
