Gojra violence: Section 302 included in case against bishop, sons
Saturday, September 26, 2009
By our correspondent

TOBA TEK SINGH: The Gojra City police included Section 302 of the PPC in the cross-version case registered against Bishop John Samuel, his sons Sheroon and Adnan, Gojra Tehsil Council minority member Fanyas Masih and 125 others regarding the Gojra violence on August 1.

Earlier, the case was registered under Sections 7 of the ATA, 295-C, 380, 436, 324, 148, 149 and 342 of the PPC. A police official said that the Section 302 had been included after the death of Muhammad Asif, a resident of Akbar Park, who was injured along with 12 other Muslims in the firing by Christians on a mob that attacked the Christian Colony following an alleged incident of desecration.

Ghulam Murtaza, the complainant of the cross-version case, told the police that he and 12 other Muslims, including deceased Muhammad Asif, were injured when the Christians opened fire at them.

He said Asif died after remaining under treatment in Gojra and Faisalabad hospitals for 50 days. The police have arrested three Christians while raids were being conducted to arrest the remaining accused.

Later, the raids were stopped after the LHC Inquiry Tribunal Judge Iqbal Hameeduddin launched a judicial probe into the violence. Meanwhile, minority leader Atif Jamil Paggan condemned the action against the Christians for alleged firing. In a press statement, he said most of the nominated accused in the case, registered for burning to death seven Christians, were still at large. He criticised a change in the cross-version case. He added that the police should have waited for the findings of the inquiry tribunal before taking any action.
