Rains wreak havoc in interior Sindh
Monday, July 20, 2009
By our correspondent

KHAIRPUR: The much-awaited rain has added to the miseries of the people of interior Sindh, destroying the standing crops and suspending power supply in Khairpur, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Ghotki and other cities for a prolonged period.

Despite the downpour, temperature did not fall and increased humidity made the air suffocating. In Thatta, life came to a standstill as rainwater inundated the city roads. Roofs of several poultry farms collapsed and growers suffered losses of crops. The district administration has declared an emergency.

APP adds: People faced hardships due to suspension of power supply to a large area of lower Sindh for eight hours on Saturday night, a report said on Sunday. Power supply was suspended from Hyderabad to Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tharparkar and other areas of lower Sindh at 10:30 pm on Saturday. It was restored at 6 am on Sunday.

For the whole night, the people, including women and children, mostly remained sleepless. Water supply to towns, cities and villages from water supply schemes was disrupted due to the power failure, causing hardships to the people in obtaining the required amount of water.

Patients in civil hospitals, Taluka hospitals and rural health centres also suffered inconvenience following the power outage. Hesco officials said the power supply was suspended from Hyderabad.
