Normal gas pressure to resume in 48 hours, KESC hopes
Sunday, July 05, 2009
By our correspondent

Karachi

Conceding that there will be at least two spells of power load-shedding during 24 hours, the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) expressed hope on Saturday that normal gas pressure would resume in the next 48 hours enabling the power utility to return to its full power generation.

KESC officials told journalists at a press briefing that at around 2pm on Saturday, the power utility had observed power load-shedding of 179 Megawatts (MW) because the total power demand of the city stood at 2,269MW.

KESC Chief of Distribution, Jan Abbas Zaidi, told journalists that the utility’s power plants and the plants of independent power producers (IPPs) had been functioning normally, while the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) was supplying 620MW.

Zaidi said that the Sawan Gas Field had been closed down for annual maintenance four days ago and it was expected to recommence supply by July 6, which would bring back the gas pressure and the quantum needed for the desired power generation by the KESC power plants.

At present, he said, the utility had been receiving around 240 MMCFT from Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) while its original need was over 300 MMCFT. He added, however, that these statistics were not static since the power generation requirement kept fluctuating as per consumers demand at different times of the day.

Apart from the constant situation of load-shedding, Zaidi said, there had been a disruption in power supply to some areas of the city, including the Memon Goth Malir Sub-Station where five spans of wire were stolen at 7pm Friday. In Baldia Town, the Tariq Gul Rehman PMT had been affected by overloading, while the overhead link cable at Nafis Cinema Malir had developed a fault. There was a disruption in the power supply to PECHS block 6, and the 500-KVA PMT in Frontier Colony had gone out of order. Most of the work on these faults had been completed, while the Gadap Grid had also been normalised, Zaidi said.
