Industry protests against disconnection of gas supply
Saturday, July 04, 2009
By our correspondent

PESHAWAR: Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) President Sharafat Ali Mubarak, Vice President Muhammad Ishaq and members of executive committee have slammed the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) for disconnecting supply of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to a number of CNG stations and industries in the provincial metropolis.

Talking to The News on Friday, Mubarak said the SNGPL authorities had not issued any prior notice of disconnection of gas supply to the industries and CNG stations. He lamented that the worsening law and order and loadshedding had already affected trade of the industrialists in Peshawar and added that disconnecting the CNG supply would multiply problems.

He went on to say that the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines should take into confidence the SCCI and the business community before taking such actions. “The authorities concerned should have discussed the matter with the business community and industrialists of the area before disconnecting the supply,” he suggested.

He claimed that about 594 out of total 2,254 industries of the province were operating regularly and added that disconnecting the CNG supply to industries would force the owners to stop working which, he said, could increase unemployment in the city.

He vowed that the SCCI would stand by the industrialists and CNG stations till a smooth supply of the commodity was ensured by the authorities. He urged Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to take action against and save the business community from further economic crisis.
