This is with reference to Roedad Khan's article titled "Setting Waziristan ablaze" (June 27). The retired bureaucrat conveniently seems to forget that even when he was in service the government and the state were dysfunctional. In fact, the dire situation of today is a result of the failure of the state to deliver what it is required to deliver to its citizens. Why not talk about mistakes made by the regimes in which Mr Khan himself served in various senior capacities?
In western societies retired men and women involve themselves in community work. They run welfare organisations and leave the decision-making to those who replaced them. They would even refuse to comment on how matters of state were being handled on the ground that they have played their innings. It is opposite in Pakistan where old retired bureaucrats and generals are ready to jump on TV screens and spread their words of wisdom -- the same wisdom, mind you, which is responsible for our present problems.
