BARA: The local Sikh community on Wednesday said they would abide by their decision to pay tax in exchange for security.
“Though we have been living in the area for decades, the security situation has deteriorated these days and the Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) has assured us full security,” Amerjit Singh and others told The News.
A delegation of Sikh and Hindu communities on Tuesday met LI chief Mangal Bagh in Tauheedabad area of Bara Tehsil and agreed to pay the tax. Taking responsibility of providing security to the Sikh, Hindu and Christian communities living in Bara Tehsil, Chora, Bazaar Zakhakhel, Karamna and Tirah Valley, the LI executive council said nobody would be allowed to harm the non-Muslim communities in the area.
Amerjit Singh said they were not under any pressure and were free to perform their religious rites. “We have friendly ties with the Muslims and they don’t interfere in our affairs,” he said.
Majority of Sikhs have been pursuing their own businesses in Bara Tehsil and Peshawar. Except for religious rites, they are part of the tribal set-up, interacting with local tribesmen in various customs and traditions.
