CHITRAL: A rabies-infected dog Saturday created panic among the residents of a remote village of the district as one person died and 16 others were infected due to the bite of the dog.
Sources said the incident happened in the Sheshe Koh Tingar area, some 60 kilometres away from here.
A councillor from the village, Taj Muhammad, said one Akbar Wali died due to the absence of the anti-rabies vaccines in the area while 16 others were also in a precarious condition. Those infected with the deadly virus included Sher Muhammad, Sher Bahadar, Nasrullah, Shamsur Rahman, Israruddin, Nasiuddin, Ihsanullah, Attiq, Ijaz, Mukhtar, Mumtaz Wali, Sabr Wali and two women.
The councillor said the vaccines were not available at the government hospitals of the area while the same, available at private stores, was beyond the purchasing power of the poor.
Taj Muhammad demanded of the government to provide treatment to the infected people on emergency basis.
