Flowers bring ‘hope’ to ‘barricaded’ Islamabad
Friday, April 10, 2009
by Saadia Khalid

Islamabad

With roads and medians embellished with colourful seasonal flowers, the metropolitan is presenting the look of a bride these days despite its worsening law and order situation.

The floral invasion in streets and along roads has added to its wonderful natural surroundings where daffodils, lilies, lavenders, roses and tulips filling aroma in the air and soothing the nerves of the residents.

All main avenues and roads of the city had been decorated with colourful seasonal flowers which are not only pleasing the aesthetic sense of its inhabitants but also spreading optimism amid the deteriorating law and order situation in the country in general and Islamabad in particular.

The credit for decorating the city in such an artistic manner goes to hundreds of gardeners of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) who are found engaged in maintaining these manicured rows of flowers from dawn to dusk.

Whether it is Constitution Avenue or 7th Avenue, Khayaban-e-Iqbal or Khayaban-i-Suhrwardy, Garden Avenue or Park Road, these ‘unsung heroes’ are found busy in enhancing the look of the ‘depressed capital’.

On the way from Park Road to Khayaban-i-Iqbal, one witnesses hundreds of gardeners performing different duties, including digging up the soil for making it more fertile, watering, cutting and sprucing up the plants.

These trimmed medians and greenbelts are undoubtedly a result of untiring efforts of gardeners who although receive a minimal amount in their salaries yet they perform their duties with dedication.

On the other hand, one can’t resist oneself by appreciating the aesthetic sense these gardeners possess as each row had been arranged according to colours and sizes of plants in such a manner that it appears the work of an artist.

There was a time when these medians and greenbelts only served the purpose of providing space to people to rest but now the scenario has changed altogether.

The day and night efforts of gardeners and planning of CDA officials proved to be fruitful and now all medians and greenbelts are presenting a beautiful look.

In addition, the construction of dancing fountains with their multicoloured lights at various spots have added to the already existing beautiful surroundings created through dazzling flowers.

Although the city appearance is unquestionably presenting a sharp contrast with its actual circumstances as far as its law and order situation and economic crisis are concerned yet tributes must be paid to gardeners who are trying their level best to show the positive side by adding to its already existing natural beauty.

One could hope that the barricaded city could revive its peace and tranquility that remained its prominent feature throughout. It is also wished that the city regains its liveliness and becomes colourful and attractive as the blooming flowers.
