This is in reference to an editorial titled "A tale from the dungeon" published in your newspaper on Jan 26 about the abduction and sexual harassment of Mst Zarina Marri. It is highly regrettable that a leading newspaper like The News has commented in its editorial on a news item which is absolutely baseless, absurd and unfounded. The Pakistan Army is a highly professional and disciplined organisation and is well-known for its self-accountability mechanism. The news item refers to an incident which happened in 2006.
It may be clarified that for the last three years, no complaint from the alleged victim's family or school was lodged and moreover, no FIR has been registered in this regard. Publication of such baseless news in media at this point in time is yet another attempt of anti-state elements to disrepute and malign the Armed Forces of Pakistan to fulfil their nefarious designs. It is requested that before commenting in editorials, such sensitive matters must be referred to the organisation concerned -- in this case, the ISPR -- for verification or otherwise.
The Armed Forces or its organisations are not involved directly or indirectly in the subject matter.
