UVAS increases FATA quota by 100pc

THE University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) has enhanced the quota of students from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) by 100 per cent for admission to its postgraduate (MPhil and PhD) degree programmes. The decision was taken at the 20th meeting of the Advanced Studies and Research Board of the UVAS chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr M Nawaz on Saturday. The meeting approved 43 synopses of MPhil, MPhil leading to PhD and PhD students of various disciplines/departments. The board also gave approval of supervisory committees as well as changes in some of the supervisory committees of MPhil and PhD students.



ZAB’s birthday tomorrow

SECRETARY Information PPP Punjab Dr Fakhr-ud-Din Chaudhry has said the provincial leadership of the party will celebrate the birthday of PPP founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto at the PPP Punjab Secretariat on January 5. PPP Provincial Information Secretary Dr Fakhr said PPP Punjab President Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan and other leaders, including Aslam Gurdaspuri, Malik Saeed Hassan, would also address a seminar. Dr Fakhr also clarified that former political secretary of slain party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto had come to his residence to condole the death of his father. He said no political issue was discussed with Naheed on the occasion adding he was only authorized to discuss the party affairs with Rukhsana Bangash.



Cloudy weather forecast

LAHORE

THE MET office has forecast a partly cloudy weather with chances of rain in the city for Sunday (today). MET officials there would be no fog on Sunday but mist would continue to exist in the air. On Saturday, different city localities received light rain followed by cold winds. The minimum and maximum temperature was recorded at 4 C and 15 C. Officials of the MET office said that cold winds were reaching the city which would increase cold. They predicted heavy rains and snowfall over the hills especially in the Northern areas, NWFP and upper parts of Punjab. The satellite map of weather showed movement of a heavy system from both Kabul and Dushanbe towards the upper side of the country.



New born’s body found

LAHORE

LYTTON Road police recovered a body of a newly born baby from its limits on Saturday. Police said the stray dogs were gnawing the newly born baby lying dead in a pile of garbage in New Churburji Chowk. Police suspected that an unidentified woman threw her illegitimate baby to conceal her crime.









Drug dealer jailed

LAHORE

AN additional district and sessions judge Syed Imam Ali Shah on Saturday awarded four months imprisonment to an accused of drug dealing and imposed a fine of Rs. 5000 on him. Accused Faheem Ali was allegedly arrested with over 105 gm of Charas by the Township police in some months back. The judge sentenced him jail after his defendants failed to prove him innocent. In case of default the convict will have to undergo one week more imprisonment.



Asthmatics may also have mental disorders

The results of a study published in the November issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry suggest there is an association between asthma and a range of mental disorders. Dr. Renee D. Goodwin, of Columbia University, New York, and colleagues studied a sample of 13,222 adults in Germany. Current and lifetime asthma cases were identified based on physician diagnosis, and the Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to assess current and lifetime mental disorders. The researchers found that 2.7 percent of the subjects currently had asthma and 5.74 percent had a history of asthma. Patients who currently had severe asthma were more than twice as likely to have an anxiety disorder and almost five times as likely to have a phobia compared with non-asthmatics. In addition, those with current severe asthma were almost five times as likely to have a panic disorder and about four times as likely to have panic attacks. Furthermore, a diagnosis of lifetime severe asthma was associated with two to three times of the risk of having an anxiety disorder, panic disorder, panic attacks, social phobia or a specific phobia. Patients with this diagnosis were also more than five times as likely to have generalized anxiety disorder or bipolar disorder.



Home Secy directed to change Thana Culture

PUNJAB Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday directed the Home Secretary and Inspector General Police to take solid measures for changing Thana Culture and initially two model police stations be set up in each district where honest, hardworking and polite staff should be posted. He further directed that an effective strategy be evolved for apprehending those proclaimed offenders who were involved in heinous crimes and had fled the country and Interpol should be contacted for this purpose. He said it was necessary to bring such absconding criminals to book and no effort should be spared in this regard.



Khosa for free judiciary

ATTORNEY General of Pakistan Sardar Latif Khosa has said that independent judiciary is critical for the solidarity of country which can be possible only with collective effort. He said the government believed in complete implementation of law and constitution. He was addressing at a ceremony held by Quad-e-Azam Law College here on Saturday. He said an independent judiciary could steer the country out of the prevailing crisis. He st essed upon abandoning blame game for the prosperity of the country. “We should promote democratic norms and work together to bring change in the country,” he said. He urged the younger generation to obey law so that in the future they could see a civilised Pakistan.



Minority minister meets CM

PROVINCIAL Minister for Minority Affairs and Human Rights, Kamran Michael, called on Punjab CM, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, at Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Saturday. Bishop of Rochester and Member House of Lords England, Nazir Ali and Bishop of Gulf & Iran, Marshal Azad, also accompanied him. Various matters came under discussion during the meeting. The CM said the present government was taking solid measures for upholding the rights and welfare of minorities, and protection of their sacred places had been ensured. He said the minorities had equal opportunities of progress and were playing an active role in the stability and development.
