35 passengers rescued by NHA staff
Friday, December 19, 2008
CHITRAL: Some 35 passengers, including children and women, were rescued by the NHA security staff at Lawari Top.

According to Assistant Director National Highway Authority Lawari Rail Tunnel Anwar Khan Khattak, a convoy of seven vehicles carrying 35 passengers was on its way from Chitral to Peshawar via Lawari Top. When the convoy reached Matti Khwar at Lawari top, it got stranded in heavy snowfall.

The convey started its journey at 7.00 am, but when it could not reach Dir till afternoon the security staff, on the direction of NHA authorities, started searching for the convoy. The rescue team, on the directives of Project Director Lawari Rail Tunnel Abdul Samad, crossed the Lawari Top by foot. The security staff reached Matte Khwar where the passengers were stranded in snow. They were rescued and were given first aid by the NHA security staff. It is pertinent to mention here that the only land route between Chitral and Peshawar has been closed from Tuesday at Lawari Top.

The main road between Chitral and Gilgit is blocked at Shindoor Pass due to heavy snowfall. As a result, Chitral has been disconnected from other parts of the country. Scheduled PIA flights are also being canceled due to bad weather. Social and political circles of Chitral lauded the NHA and the security staff for the operation in which 35 passengers were rescued.
