Register people coming to Karachi: Zardari
Orders setting up of comprehensive database

Saturday, November 22, 2008
By Tahir Hasan Khan

Karachi

President Asif Ali Zardari has directed the administration to register all people coming to Karachi, as well as tenants of the city, at police stations and adopt better and modern methods for making the city more secure. He said that the security of Karachi was essential for to the development of Pakistan.

He directed the provincial administration to improve the law and order situation in Sindh and added that “Pakistan is our land and we have to defend Karachi and our land”.

Chairing a high-level meeting to review the law and order situation at Governor House on Friday, the President directed that Karachi be divided into zones and committees be formed for security, especially before the holy month of Muharram.

City Nazim Mustafa Kamal and Inspector General of Police, Sindh, briefed the meeting about law and order and development projects while Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and others also attended the meeting.

President Zardari said that Karachi is a cosmopolitan city and welcomes everyone with its good environment, cheap accommodation and employment opportunities. Therefore, everyone coming to Karachi must be registered at police stations - as should tenants of the city be, he added.

“The government is following people-friendly policies, without which we cannot be secure and make Karachi a developed city. A comprehensive database about Madaris and students should be compiled and all methods be used to make Karachi more secure,” he said.

He said that police stations should be modernised and equipped with the latest vehicles and equipment, as well as have access to trained human force, while the area police, on their part, have to play an important role in establishing peace and security.

President Zardari said that the federal government would provide all necessary assistance to the provincial government for establishing peace and security in Karachi.

He said that the top priority of the government was to ensure peace, security and safety in Karachi, which would, in turn, promote investment. He said that this was a big task and could only be achieved via special measures. “I want security, security and security,” he emphasised.

Zardari further directed that a database about aliens be prepared and complete documentation be maintained. Talking about development projects, the President claimed that Karachi was going to become Paris in the wake of various development projects and directed that self-reliant methods be employed for generating water resources.

“Karachi is lucky in that it has seawater as well as [fresh] underground water and both can be utilized,” he said, adding, that the city could be self-reliant in terms of generating electricity and that the federal government would assist the provincial government in this effort.
