The 1st South Asian Conference of Physiological Societies got underway here on Monday with students from medical universities and colleges from all over Pakistan as well as representatives from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bulgaria and Canada in attendance to avail the opportunity of exchanging knowledge on latest scientific research.
The president of Pakistan Medical and Dental College (PM&DC) Dr. Sibtul Husnain was the chief guest at the inaugural session of the three-day conference. “The regions comprising Saarc countries is the most populated in the world. I can see this conference as marking the beginning of collective research and education,” he remarked.
The chairman of the organising Committee Professor Dr Nasir Afzal threw light on the theme of the conference, which is ‘Physiological updates: trends, opportunities and challenges.’ Dr. Mumtaz Memon, president, Pakistan Physiological Society (PPS) informed that the proceedings of the conference will be published as a special supplement of Pakistan Journal of Physiology, an official publication of PPS.
Visiting Indian delegate Dr. Mohammad Fahim from International Advisory Board introduced SAAP. Dr. Arif Siddiqui, general secretary, PPS, Department of Biological and Bio-Medical Sciences, Aga Khan University, stated that the conference will cover all sub-disciplines of physiology and will place special emphasis on bioethics by organizing a symposium on ‘Bioethics and Challenges in Medical Education.’ The conference will consist of 11 sessions on different aspects of physiology. Each session will include group discussions to foster exchange of knowledge between different scholars from South Asian countries.
According to Dr. Nasir Afzal, the purpose of the conference is to provide a platform for exchange of information, ideas and concepts. This will not only stimulate further research but also provide an opportunity for collaboration to scientists and medical teachers of Saarc and other countries of the region. He described that the scientific programme will include plenary lectures, invited lectures, oral presentations and posters sessions.
The session concluded with beautiful souvenirs being presented by Dr. Sibtul Husnian and Professor M. Aslam, principal, Shifa College of Medicine, to office bearers of PPS. The closing ceremony of the conference will take place on November 12.
