TAKHTBHAI: Two policemen including an assistant sub-inspector were killed and two others were injured when unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire and hurled a handgrenade at a police van near Lundkhwar Tuesday.
Police and local sources said the gunmen ambushed the van that was in use of cops from the Kharki police post. The police were on routine patrolling at the time. Assistant sub-inspector of police, Muhammad Sher, and Constable Arif Shah died on the spot after being hit by bullets and due to the explosion caused by the grenade.
Two other police constables, Sadiq and Rajid Ali, sustained bullet injuries in the attack and were rushed to a hospital in Dargai. Later, they were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Mardan.
The attackers apparently militants escaped soon after the incident. Police reinforcements were rushed to Lundkhwar area but were unable to apprehend the attackers. The cops cordoned off and combed the area as investigations into the attack were started in right earnest.
Though it isn’t clear if the attackers were militants, it is a fact that Taliban are active in parts of Mardan district and have targetted policemen and certain political figures. Mardan Cantonment area has been attacked with rockets and suicide bombings targetting members of the security forces have taken place.
Rockets were also fired at the house of NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti in Mardan and the DIG Syed Akhtar Ali Shah has survived a suicide bombing at his office recently in which some of his police guards were killed.
