Flour crisis, power outages lead to road blockade
Sunday, October 26, 2008
Our correspondent

MARDAN: Residents of Baghdada and adjacent areas blocked the main Mardan-Malakand Road for more than three hours in protest against the electricity loadshedding and flour shortage.

A large number of people, including office-bearers of the carpenters association of Baghdada, staged a demonstration against Pesco authorities.

Iftekhar Khan, the Carpenters Association president, stated in his speech that despite government announcement about eight-hour loadshedding, the area was witnessing more than 18 hours blackout on a daily basis.

Instead of reducing the loadshedding period, the authorities were sending the masses inflated electricity bills.

The Mardan-Malakand Road links more than six districts and two tribal agencies and its blockade causes problems for thousands of travellers and businesspersons.

Later, the protesters lifted the blockade of the road on the intervention of some officials. However, they warned of closing the road permanently if the loadshedding duration was not reduced and flour was not provided to people on official rates.

Relief goods for IDPs: Truth Worth Foundation (TWF) Islamabad distributed relief goods, including food and clothes, among the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of Bajaur Agency at Sheikh Yasin Town camp in Mardan Saturday.

The foundation chairperson, Syeda Zehra Fatmi, told this correspondent that earlier the foundation twice distributed two truckloads of relief goods including food, clothes, quilts, mattresses and beds to the IDPs in the district.

She said the package included rice, sugar, pulses, tea, cooking oil and flour for 220 families and hoped that food items were sufficient for at least two weeks. She said her foundation would continue providing relief goods to the masses in hour of need.
