 Hyderabad throw Zebras out
Monday, October 06, 2008
From our correspondent

LAHORE: Karachi Zebras were thrown out of semifinals contention, as they succumed to their second defeat in the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) 2008-09 National Twenty20 Cup Cricket Championship, when they were beaten by Hyderabad Hawks by a 30 runs margin, here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

Hyderabad Hawks will now meet defending champions Sialkot Stallions in their last Group B match, here at the Bagh-e-Jinnah Ground on Monday (today). Whichever teams wins will make the last-four, but the Stallions are the clear favourites.

Yesterday, the Hawks lost three wickets with only 28 runs on the board after deciding to bat first. Pakistan’s One-day International representative Rizwan Ahmed with Shahid Qambrani then added 128 runs in a magnificent fourth-wicket stand as their team raced to 169 for four in 20 overs.

The partnership came in about 15 overs. Rizwan’s 57 took only 43 balls to make with six fours and a six while Shahid required just 36 balls for his 48 not out with six fours.

The Zebras were restricted to 139 for nine in their allotted overs. The start was great, with 87 runs coming in nine overs. The experienced left-hander Shadab Kabir made a run-a-ball 37 with three fours. But the best came from 18-year-old right-hander Shahzaib Hasan who took only 32 balls to hit 61 runs with seven fours and three sixes.

But due to some efficient bowling by the Hyderabad attack, especially off-spinning captain Faisal Athar (3-7 in two overs), eight Karachi wickets fell for a mere 28 runs in the last 11 overs or so.
