Senate body welcomes Gen Kayani’s statements
Friday, September 12, 2008
ISLAMABAD: The Functional Committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights welcomed on Thursday the statement of Chief of the Army Staff General Pervez Kayani, who stated that Pakistan's integrity would be defended at all costs.

The committee demanded of the government to take practical steps to avoid gruesome incidents like the one occurred in Bajaur recently. The committee also asked the government to provide relief to the people who had to migrate to safer places from Bajaur. It said an inquiry report about alleged distribution of hatred pamphlets there should be tabled.

Senator S M Zafar presided over the committee's meeting held here in the Parliament House. It reviewed the facilities being provided to migrants from Bajaur. The interior secretary apprised the meeting of the facilities being given to Bajaur migrants in the camps, which the government has established for them. Declaring attack by the US forces in Pakistan as state barbarity, Senator Abdul Rashid said 90 per cent innocent people were killed in these attacks. He demanded of the government to compensate heirs of the people killed in attacks on Bajaur.

Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naek admitted during the meeting that human rights violations were committed in FATA but rejected the impression that it was the violation of the Constitution and law.

The minister said the draft of FATA regulation has been prepared on the directives of the prime minister by abolishing the FCR and it would be sent to the president after the approval by the federal cabinet. Under FATA regulation, Farooq Naek said a tribunal, comprising two members of FATA secretariat and a retired judge of High Court, would be set up.
