COLOMBO: Sri Lankan troops captured a strategic town from Tamil Tiger rebels in the island’s restive north on Saturday, a move that will restrict supplies to the insurgents’ front lines, a military official said.
Military spokesman Brig Udaya Nanayakkara said soldiers have taken control of Palampiddi town in Mannar district but casualty details were still not known.
He said the supply route between the northern Vavuniya and Mannar districts will be “completely denied’’ to the rebels because soldiers are holding Palampiddi. Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan was not immediately available for comment.
Sri Lankan troops have tried to break into the rebels’ northern stronghold from four fronts for the past several months. The government has vowed to crush the rebel group and dismantle its de facto state by the end of the year.
Earlier on Saturday, a hand grenade exploded in Vavuniya town, wounding 17 civilians, the military said.
