Ties with PPP depend on judges’ restoration: Zafar
Sunday, May 18, 2008
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N Chairman Raja Zafar-ul-Haq on Saturday said the future relations between the two major coalition parties would depend on the restoration of the deposed judges.

He said the judges were sacked in November last year through an executive order by the then Army chief.

They can be and should be restored through an executive order and there is no need for constitutional amendment, he said.

Zafar said the PML-N was committed to restore the pre-emergency status of the judiciary as this was a national requirement and a must for the country to establish democracy, the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution.

He said the heads of the PML-N and the PPP had signed a declaration on March 9 to restore the deposed judges within 30 days, which was later extended to May 12 after the talks in Dubai.

The PML-N chairman said Nawaz Sharif had announced the May 12 date with the agreement of the PPP leadership. Zafar said the party would continue to support the PPP-led government.

"We will not become a part of any move to destabilise this government,î he said, emphasising that the country needed political and economic stability.

Answering a question, Zafar said the PML leadership was not taken into confidence over the appointment of new governor in the Punjab.

The party was only informed about Taseer's appointment but was not taken into confidence despite the PML-N being in power in the province.
