 LUMS student commits suicide
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
LAHORE

A fourth-year student of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) committed suicide by hanging himself inside the varsity hostel in Defence Police precincts on Tuesday.

The young man was found hanging with ceiling fan of his hostel’s room at LUMS around 2.30 afternoon.

The police said Hashir Munawar, resident of DHA Karachi, was studying at LUMS with economics as major subject. Hashir could not perform well in the last quarter owing to which his GPA went down at the university.

According to LUMS sources, the university administration separated Hashir from his courses and placed him on probation due to which he was disheartened.

On Tuesday, Hashir’s mother called him on his cell phone but he did not attend the call over which she called her younger son Aqib Munawar who was also a student of the same university.

Aqib Munawar reached his brother’s room number 111 in M-I hostel and knocked the door but he did not find any response. Aqib went around in search of his brother but failed. Later, he called the warden of the hostel who had extra key of the room.

As Aqib and the hostel warden opened the door, they found Hashir Munawar dead and hanged with the ceiling fan of his room.

According to some LUMS students, Hashir was a final year student and was average in his studies. “He was, however, a good player of volley ball”, they added. “Hashir was also a member of the LUMS Entrepreneur Society”, said a LUMS student on condition of anonymity.

Another student said a shocking environment prevailed over the campus as soon as the news of suicide surfaced. “The varsity administration has to postpone the tests”, he added, saying “Mid term exams were being conducted these days”.
