Pakistan, West Indies aim for U15s final spot
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
ST KITTS: The Pakistan Under-15s team was meeting Bangladesh in a semifinal match of the knockout stage, of the CLICO International Under-15 Cricket Championship, here in St Kitts late on Tuesday. The match was to start at 6.30pm Pakistan Standard Time.

On Sunday, Pakistan had started by defeating Ireland by a convincing eight-wicket margin at the Kensingon Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Leg-spinner Usman Qadir, son of the legendary Pakistan player Abdul Qadir, captured three wickets for 22 runs in his 10 overs.

But Karachi’s left-arm Chinaman specialist Ahsan Mirza, who was declared Man of the Match, was even more effective. He took three wickets for a mere six runs from 7.4 overs.

Bangladesh had earlier defeated Holland by nine wickets on Saturday.

After a dominating victory in the first knockout round in Barbados, also on Saturday, the West Indies were facing the Americas Development XI in Tuesday’s other semifinal in St Kitts.

The pre tournament favorites, West Indies, completed a commanding 144-run victory over Malaysia to move into the semis with Trinidad and Tobago’s left-arm spinner, Derone Davis, picking up three for 12 from ten overs to bowl out Malaysia for 94 after Kraigg Brathwaite’s 122 helped the home team reach 241 for seven.

The Americas meanwhile defeated Kenya by six wickets in their opening fixture.

The eight-team tournament from April 19 to May 4, organised by All Sports Promotions, will see West Indies, Pakistan, Kenya, Malaysia, Ireland, Holland, Bangladesh and the International Cricket Council (ICC) Americas team comprising players from Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands and The Bahamas in action.

The matches will be played in Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, Guyana, Barbados, and St Kitts. The championship has been split into two phases — knockout and league — the knockout phase from April 19-24 and the league from April 26-May 4.

The tournament final will

take place at Warner Park in

St Kitts on Thursday (tomorrow).
