KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, Syed Sardar Ahmed, has been appointed as leader of opposition in Sindh Assembly, Geo News reported.

Secretary Sindh Assembly has issued an official notification in this regard.

Earlier on Tuesday, the MQM, former allies of the Pakistan People’s Party-led government, submitted an application to the office of the Speaker Sindh Assembly, nominating Syed Sardar Ahmed as the leader of the opposition.

An MQM delegation called on Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro in his chamber at Sindh Assembly to lodge the application with him after the resignations of federal/provincial ministers, advisers, special advisers, and coordinators were accepted.

The said application was undersigned by 40 MQM lawmakers.

The MQM is the second largest party in the House after the PPP with 51 MPAs and has parted ways with the PPP over a host of issues including the withdrawal of criminal cases against alleged Lyari-based gangsters.

However, certain sections of the media reported that there was some sort of an “understanding” between the PPP and the MQM over the latter becoming an opposition party.
