Myanmar rebuts Muslim crackdown concerns

YANGON: Myanmar on Monday told a UN rights envoy it rejected accusations of abuse by security forces in the wake of communal unrest, after the United Nations raised fears of a crackdown on Muslims.

In a press conference attended by UN Special Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana, Myanmar's foreign minister said the government had exercised "maximum restraint" in bringing an end to the violence in western Rakhine State.

"As such, Myanmar strongly rejects the accusations made by some quarters that abuses and excessive use of force were made by the authorities in dealing with the situation," Wunna Maung Lwin told reporters.

He said the country "totally rejects the attempts by some quarters to politicise and internationalise this situation as a religious issue".

Quintana told reporters that on Tuesday he planned to visit Rakhine, where tens of thousands remain displaced by fighting that erupted between Buddhist and Muslim communities in early June.

His trip comes just days after the United Nations warned that Muslim communities in Rakhine, particularly the Rohingya people, were being targeted by security forces.

Earlier this month Amnesty International warned of "credible reports" of abuses -- including rape and unlawful killings -- by both Rakhine Buddhists and the security forces.

According to official figures, at least 77 people were killed in the unrest, including eight killed by security forces.

Of the more than 60,000 displaced, Myanmar officials said the vast majority -- around 53,000 -- were Muslims.

Ten aid organisation staff -- six from the UN and four employees of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) -- are among more than 800 people being held in relation to the unrest.

Myanmar's government considers the estimated 800,000 Rohingya in the country to be foreigners while many citizens see them as illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh and view them with hostility.

Earlier this month, President Thein Sein told the United Nations that refugee camps or deportation was the "solution" for the Rohingya, according to his official website. Quintana is set to meet the Myanmar leader in the capital Naypyidaw on Friday. (AFP)

Silence of USA who boast to be champion of human rights is quite understandable as Yahood and Hanood are one against muslims, but what is wrong with OIC and muslim umma, perhaps they are afraid of annoyance of America if they speak against these atrocities.

These hapless people are being shot at by Burmese helicopter gunships and forced to return to be killed and thrown into the sea. Some who do manage to reach Bangladesh (the nearest Muslim country) are forced at gunpoint by border guards to return. This arrogance of Bangladesh is not understood. Have they forgotten that millions of their own kind and languishing in Saudi prisons or being beheaded there? This Muslim country has no compassion for their own kind. It's truly despicable!

You cold blooded murderers but why is Muslim Media is silent? why is Muslim Ummah is Silent? why is Muslim Leadership is Silent? How long do Muslims continue to live like silent spectator. Shame on all Muslims. What do we tell Allah SWT, we were busy caring for our family and seeking better livelihood.

They should be asked who are 100,000 muslim who are living in tents and in open on the border of burma and trying to flee to Bangal. Burma security forces did the same what Indian security forces did in Gujrat roits. Indian security forces instead of protecting the muslim from the hindu killing gangs helped the gangs to kill muslims brutally.

OIC should send independent observers to find out the truth in this rogue country of Buddhist thugs. Pakistan should arm Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Malaysia with Babur Stealth Cruise Missiles so that this nation of Buddhist thugs can be brought to its senses.

The developed world chooses to ignore these atrocities in third world countries for reasond best known to them.I am sure if there was one American citizen killed in such occurences, the entire US navy would be pounding Napidaw to prehistoric times. But when its just these poor hapless natives getting slaughtered, all the world powers stick their heads in the sand and pretend they dont see this happening.Wake up world, this is a Genocide that each and everyone one of us is aware about.
