Saif doesn’t want Kareena to convert

NEW DELHI: Well, looks like the time has come to formulate new customs. Kareena Kapoor, who is all set to tie the nuptial with beau Saif Ali Khan in October, will not follow in the footsteps of her to-be-mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore Bengali had converted to Islam to get married to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. But the Kapoor girl will not change her religion.

Even Saif doesn’t believe in the tradition of embracing a new religion to get married in case of an inter-religion marriage.

Talking to a reputed media house, Saif said, “I would never want her (Kareena) to change her religion. That is the trouble with religion really... it expects conversion. I don’t buy or believe that. I think it`s good that the government, too, has - unless I`m misinformed about the law amended to include it in the Special Marriage Act. If and when we do get married, no one has to change his or her religion.”

Saif’s mother Sharmila changed her name to Ayesha Begum post marriage and even his first wife, actress Amrita Singh, who was sikh had converted her religion to Islam. But Kareena would not be doing so.

Religion is a matter of choice of an individual, not force. Doesn't matter what XYZ thinks the couple should or shouldn't do. Till date I haven't seen anything beneficial out of religious followings apart from pain, division of societies and culture and endless killings in the name of wars. We have too much poverty and illiteracy to deal with than think about religions.

Javed, Sharmila Tagore is the great grand neice of Rabindranath Tagore who won the Nobel Prize. She married Patuadi because she loved him and not because he was a Nawab. Unlike Pakistan, India abolished Rajas, Nawabs, Wadweras, Zamindars and Sardars immediately after independance. In fact, she belonged to a more well known family and was a film star. In India, it is quite common to marry between religions and communities.

This should be no one's business. Best wishes Kareena and Saif. Good thing you don't live in Pakistan.

AMRITA SINGH was her stage name. She was not a Sikh but a Muslim and her real name is Sabah. Please investigate before publish. I totally agree with Saif. I am myself married to a Sikh and would never impose my version of religion on her. This will be a disservice to the religion.

He doesn't know that Muslims cannot marry Hindu girls unless they become Muslims. Islam only allows marrying Christian and Jews chaste women. Hence this marriage will be invalid according to Islam and he will be committing a grave sin.
