17th Sindh Games: Medals galore as Karachi clinch winners’ trophy
KARACHI: Karachi ensured the winners’ trophy when they took an unassailable lead in both the men’s and women’s section on the penultimate day of the 17th Sindh Games being held here at different venues on Saturday.
Till the filing of this story, in men’s section Karachi were leading with 37 gold, 13 silver and 5 bronze. They were followed by Hyderabad with 5 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze. Larkana were trailing at the third spot with 4 gold, 11 silver and 8 bronze.
In women’s section, Karachi were leading with 15 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze. Hyderabad were trailing second with 3 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze. Larkana were at third place with 4 gold and one bronze.
Meanwhile, Karachi won both men’s and women’s athletics trophies following their athletes’ superb performance here at the PSB Coaching Centre.
In the men’s section, Karachi finished with 15 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. They were followed by Hyderabad with one gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze.
Benazirabad clinched third position with one gold, 2 silver and one bronze.
In the women’s section, Karachi finished as winners with 12 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze. Hyderabad ended as runners-up with 2 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze. Mirpurkhas wrapped-up their journey with 2 silver and 6 bronze.
Karachi’s Arbab Tanoli was declared the best male athlete with 2 gold and one silver, while Karachi’s Esha Assan was adjudged as the best woman athlete with 5 gold, three individual and two relays.
At the Sindh Sports Board (SSB) complex, Karachi swept the wushu kung fu event with all 6 gold medals to lift the winners’ trophy. Hyderabad finished as runners-up with 4 silver medals and one bronze while Benazirabad finished third with one silver and 2 bronze medals.
At the KMC Stadium, Karachi women football team crushed Hyderabad 8-0 in the final to clinch the title.
Ali Sadiq hit a fine hat-trick which also enabled her to emerge as the top scorer of the event with five goals to her credit. She was also joined on the scoresheet by Kiran Karim, Shumaila Hussain, Rabia Jawad, Tamanna and Shazney with a single goal each.
Sukkur claimed bronze by finishing third after beating Benazirabad 1-0 in the third position outing.
Larkana won weightlifting event in the Mini Sports Complex Nazimabad by virtue of 49 points. Sukkur finished second with 46 points and Hyderabad ended third with 33 points.
As per details in the 56kg, Shah Jehan Ali of Larkana got gold, Aleem Ahmed of Larkana secured silver, while Saghir of Karachi claimed bronze. In the 62kg, Arif of Mirpurkhas got gold, Mohammad Maseehuddin of Hyderabad clinched silver, while Jehangir of Sukkur claimed bronze. In the 77kg, Gabriel John of Karachi got gold, Naeem Rasheed of Karachi got silver, while Waqar Qadir of Larkana finished with a bronze. The 85kg gold went to Sanjay Sony Rajput of Sukkur, Mashooq Ali of Larkana claimed silver, while Nouman Manzoor of Hyderabad picked bronze.
The 94kg gold went to Gulab of Shaheed Benazirabad, Mohammad Sharif of Hyderabad claimed silver, while Syed Sajid Ali Shah of Larkana got bronze.
Karachi also won men’s judo event trophy with 6 gold medals and one silver. Hyderabad clinched one gold, 2 silver and as many bronze medals. Larkana claimed 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. In women’s judo, Karachi got 4 gold and 2 silver, Hyderabad clinched 2 gold, 3 silver and one bronze, while Sukkur claimed one silver and 3 bronze medals.
On Sunday (today), the 26 cyclists from six divisions will compete on the final day. The organisers told ‘The News’ that the race would begin at 7am from Mazar-e-Quaid and will end at the VVIP gate at Guru Mandar. The distance is 60 kilometre.
