LAHORE: Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman, Shahibzada Fazal Karim Said on Wednesday, that the Kalabagh Dam was vital for Pakistan’s survival, Geo News reported.

He said, the country was losing Rs. 132 billion annually, because no headway was made regarding the KBD.

Addressing the oath taking ceremony of the Sunni Youth Council in Lahore, Shahibzada Fazal Karim urged for Rs. 5 billion to be allocated for the Thar Coal project in the new budget, as the energy crisis was eating away the very vitality of the country. The energy sector should be given priority just as the defence sector, for resolving the crisis, he said.

Shahibzada said that the restoration of Nato supply would be tantamount to committing national suicide. Pakistan should not risk its own security for the stake of others, he said.

What a timing Sahibzada Sahib has selected for this announcement of support for KBD. He wants to provide a respite to Zardari and Iltaf by raising a controversial issue at this moment once people of Pakistan seem to be uniting on one point agenda, 'get rid of zardari mafia'.

No doubt. Dams are the life line for a country but we have made it an issue of politics and self egoness. The politicl leadership, economists, exprts and intellectuls should sit together on the issue of dams in the wake of prevailiting power crisis. We should explore all the possible options to ovecome power crisis eg building small dams, Ther coal project, and not feel shy to prchase cheap electricity from India when we already have given her MFN status instead of costly RPP/IPP projects
