KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Siraj-ul-Haq arrived in Karachi on Saturday for their planned joint-rally in the city ahead of the local government elections.

The two leaders arrived at the Karachi airport and were greeted by their party workers and supporters. Khan and Haq are leading the rally which will pass through Sharah-e-Faisal and will then head to Millennium Mall onwards to Hassan Square and then finally to Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum where the leaders will address their party workers.

Commissioner says rally not allowed under ECP code of conduct

However, neither PTI nor JI have sought permission to hold a rally in Karachi from the city administration. According to Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqui the administration had been intimated but an official permission was not secured. He added that while permission for a corner meeting can be given a rally is not allowed in line with the code of conduct issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The ECP has instructed that its code of conduct be enforced, Siddiqui added.

Silence taken as consent

The PTI however maintains that it had intimated the administration and law enforcement agencies and proof of receipt of those requests was available with the party.

Speaking to Geo News, Imran Ismail said that historically the administration never gives them anything in writing in the last 15 years. Whenever they have to refuse permission they let us know but in the event of their permission they simply remain silent. He added that their silence was taken as consent by the party.
