SRINAGAR: The Indian army said it has killed three armed attackers holed up in an officers' mess during a six-hour gun-battle at an Indian army camp near the Line of Control (LoC) in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IoK) on Wednesday.

The Indian army claimed to have recovered the bodies of the three gunmen and of one unidentified individual, believed to have worked on the base.

The gunmen entered the army camp at around 6 am (0030 GMT) and the firing started about an hour later, said an Indian army officer, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak on the record.

The attackers armed with AK-47s had taken up positions in the officers' mess and blown up a kerosene tank, wounding one person.

Loud explosions were heard as the armed attackers entered the army camp throwing grenades and firing automatic weapons in Tangdhar area of Kupwara district, 140 kilometres northwest of the main city of Srinagar.

The attackers cut a perimeter fence and penetrated the battalion headquarters in Tangdhar, news agency Reuters reported.
