KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Saturday announced shelving their operation of collecting hides of sacrificial animals on the occasion of Eidul Azha with immediate effect over what it terms excessive use of force against the party by the ‘authorities’.

The Sindh Rangers and other law enforcement agencies have arrested dozens of people involved in ‘snatching of hides of sacrificial animals’ from different areas of the city since yesterday, the first day of Eid.

The Sindh government had announced a strict code of conduct for collection of animal hides according to which only registered organisations were allowed to collect them.

Speaking at a press conference today at Tariq ground here, MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar said that Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation (KKF), MQM’s charity wing, was being stopped from collecting the hides.

He said about 60,000 hides have also been snatched from the KKF.

“We are halting the operation of collecting hides with immediate effect,” Sattar announced.

The senior MQM leader also claimed that hide collectors and donors both were being threatened despite no forcible collection of hides by his party.

“Over 100 vehicles full of sacrificial hides have been seized... all drivers had commissioner’s approval letters,” he said, adding that contractors’ trucks were still clamped in different police stations of the metropolis.

“Those stopping KKF from collecting hides are breaking laws... we want to resolve the issue through dialogue.”
