SIALKOT: At least six Pakistani civilians have been killed and 46 wounded in the latest episode of unprovoked cross-border firing and shelling by Indian forces near the Sialkot Working Boundary, officials said on Friday.

A spokesman for the ISPR, the military's public relations wing, confirmed the death toll, adding that the 46 injured include 22 women and a minor girl.

Sources said the unprovoked firing and shelling began in the wee hours of Friday around 3:00AM, and still continues intermittently in Charwa, Chaprar and Suchetgarh sectors of Sialkot adjacent to the Working Boundary.

The firing caused fear and panic among the residents, a majority of whom stayed awake overnight. Officials said Chenab Rangers soldiers responded befittingly and silenced the guns of the Indian forces.

The latest episode of cross-border firing comes days after high-level talks between the two country’s National Security Advisers were cancelled.

The chiefs of the Pakistan Rangers and the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) are still scheduled to meet on Sept 9 in New Delhi, where the two sides are expected to discuss the situation on the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working Boundary.
