US urges Pakistan, India to resume formal dialogue soon

WASHINGTON: The United States has expressed disappointment that the NSA-level talks did not take place between Pakistan and India, and urged both the countries to resume the formal dialogue process soon.

In a daily briefing, US State Department Spokesman John Kirby said, “We’re disappointed that the talks didn’t happen. And as I’ve said before, we just encourage India and Pakistan to resume a formal dialogue soon.”

He said, “Tensions in the region are significant and the US believes it’s important for leaders of both countries to resume dialogue to try to come to some resolution.”

Kirby said, Pakistan and India have a chance to talk during UN General Assembly meeting next month, however, it is up to the leaders of both the countries to whether or not they will use the opportunity to further discuss.

To a question, Kirby said, US positions on the tension in Kashmir is not changed and that this is an issue that Pakistan and India need to resolve.
