Death toll from Karachi heat wave rises to 1,123

KARACHI: The mercury may have dropped slightly but the heatwave in Karachi continues to claim victims. Since last night, thirty-five more people lost the battle for life at various hospitals across the metropolis, taking the total death toll to 1,123.

KARACHI: The mercury may have dropped slightly but the heatwave in Karachi continues to claim victims. Since last night, thirty-five more people lost the battle for life at various hospitals across the metropolis, taking the total death toll to 1,123.

The highest temperature recorded in the city was in the mid forties as the heatwave peaked. Over the last 48-hours some cloud cover and a brisk sea breeze has provided some respite.

According to Dr. Javed Jamali the spokesman at the Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) spokesman nine patients have died at the hospital since last night, taking the total deaths recorded at the hospital to 338.

Nine more patients lost their lives at different hospital of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) taking the total recorded deaths to 222, while 14 more patients lost their lives at the Civil Hospital taking the total death toll to 138.

One patient lost his life at the Liaquat National Hospital, raising the number of total deaths from the heat wave to 1,123

Weather outlook

The Meteorological Department has forecast cloud cover over Karachi for Saturday with the temperature expected to stay range-bound between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius.

The Met Department expects the brisk blowing sea breeze from the south west to keep the heat at bay and while the cloud cover will stay, no rainfall is expected.
